Blazers Win Third Straight Section 9, Class C Crown

MIDDLETOWN – All due respect to Erin Fox and all that the Millbrook High School girls basketball star has accomplished – all-time leading scorer in the Mid-Hudson Athletic League, three straight Section 9, Class C titles, a state championship, a scholarship to Division I Marist College – but it’s next generation up for the Blazers.

With top-seeded S.S. Seward focusing its defensive efforts on Fox and teammate Maddy Harkenrider, Millbrook’s “kids” stepped it up Thursday night.

Freshman Ella Wilson had a career-high in points, eighth-grader Natalie Fox – yep, Erin’s lil’ sis – had a double-double, and the second-seeded Blazers recovered from an early deficit to beat Seward, 66-48, for their third straight sectional crown.

Millbrook, the 2018 state champs and 2019 state semifinalist, start a hopeful journey back to Glens Falls with a state regional game on Tuesday against the Section 1 champion at Horace Greeley High School.

The Blazers had trouble with the over-shifted defense in the first quarter, falling behind 17-7. But once they adjusted, it was done. Millbrook went on a 38-19 run over the middle quarters to take control of the game.

“I’m proud of the team for not letting the early deficit get to them,” Blazers coach Adam Peek said. “They wanted to deny Erin and Maddy so the other girls had to step up. It was a matter of playing through the nerves and settling down, and then using our size advantage inside.”

Natalie Fox controlled the inside, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, and Wilson more than compensated for Erin Fox and Harkenrider with a career-high 24 points.

“I’m so proud of Ella and Natalie,” Peek said. “They really propelled us to the win.”
