Goldbacks Boys Soccer Coach Earns 300th Win

NEWBURGH – The symmetry was not lost on Newburgh Free Academy boys soccer coach Matt Iorlano.

“I remember my first win as if it were yesterday,” he said. “It was over Goshen in 1996, we won 4-2,”

Some 23 years later, Iorlano’s soccer life has come circle. The Goldbacks beat Pine Bush on Monday by the same score, 4-2, for his 300th career victory.

It was a moment he and longtime assistant Paul Matthews anticipated, being just six wins away at the start of the season, but both jokingly began wondering if it would ever come after NFA swung and missed to reach the milestone in the previous three games.

Nonetheless, it turned out to be a memorable night in more ways than one.

“300 wins is something I am definitely very proud of,” he said. “I will always remember the game; I honestly don’t think the weather could have been much worse, pouring rain, cold and windy. But my boys played as though the turf was bone dry. They’re such a skilled group of kids.”

And when it was over, Iorlano and Matthews broke the news to the players, who went crazy.

“They had no idea. We hadn’t said anything leading up to it because we didn’t want to put any pressure on them,” Iorlano said. “They were so excited that they were the team to accomplish this goal and so happy for me. Having my parents and one of my sons there also made it a real special night, just a lot of love on that field. Something I will never forget.”
