Spackenkill Baseball Coach Earns Milestone Win

HYDE PARK – Spackenkill High School baseball coach Don Niese was once asked by HVSR what was the main ingredient to his success in leading the program.

His answer, typically, was less about what he’s done over the years and more about ‘those guys.’

“Those guys over there are the whole key,” he said, gesturing to his team. “I’ve been blessed with good players year in and year out.”

One of them just helped deliver a milestone win for Niese.

Zach Cioffi scattered five hits over six innings on Wednesday to handful newly minted MHAL champion Roosevelt, and the Spartans beat the Presidents, 10-2, for Niese’s 300th career victory.

Spackenkill is now 13-5 overall this season.

“It was definitely cool to be on the mound for his 300th win,” Cioffi said. “It doesn’t matter what level you’re playing at or what school size you are when you are talking about an accomplishment like 300 wins. It’s something really special and deserves a lot of respect.”

Niese isn’t just a coach, however. He nurtures talent.

“I came to varsity as a shy sophomore and he’s help me grow and become more confident in myself and my abilities,” Cioffi said. “I’m definitely really happy to see him get this accomplishment because it is well-deserved.”

Joe Arcuri had a pair of doubles and four RBI to lead the offense. Josh Koller also had two doubles among his three hits, Connor Lee had two hits and Anthony Silvestri had two RBI.
