After Topping John Jay Last Week, Admirals Beat Up Mamaroneck

MAMARONECK – A football coach’s biggest nightmare in the aftermath of a significant win is always whether his team will rise to the occasion the following week, or suffer a letdown.

Arlington High School coach Mike Morano made sure to have his team ready on Friday night.

Six days after beating highly-regarded rival John Jay at John Jay, the Admirals hit the road again and knocked off Mamaroneck on Friday night, 44-0, in a non-league game.

Arlington is now 2-1 overall as it resumes league play next weekend.

Coach Mike Morano said simply preached total focus and maximum effort.

“We got that last Saturday at Jay, got it all week in practice, and got it tonight,” Morano said. “We are just taking things one game at a time and focusing on the things we can control to get better.”

Richie Finn had rushing touchdowns of 5 and 42 yards, while teammate Xavier Grant rumbled in from 35 yards out for a score.

Aston McKenzie and Frankie Vanzilotta both had interception returns for a touchdown, and Vanzilotta had an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Gary Lozito and Ricky Wagner also had INTs for the Admirals.

Now, that 7-0 loss to Spring Valley in the opening game is getting farther and farther away in the rear-view mirror.

“That first game was a complete and total lack of focus during the practice week. That can happen with a young and inexperienced team. It was a good wake up call for everyone,” Morano said. “It also didn’t help that our kicker didn’t play, and with four trips to the red zone that would have yielded points had he played.”
