Ten Girls Qualify For State Championship Meet

HYDE PARK – Onteora High School’s Abigail Nolan has already left a legacy to her gymnastics career as a three-time Section 9 all-around champion – and she’s only a freshman.

Nolan won every event, and the all-around, at the recent Section 9 championship meet, leading a contingent of 10 gymnasts from the section that will compete at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships on Sunday at Cold Spring Harbor High School.

Nolan scored a 9.0 on the vault, 8.3 on the uneven parallel bars, 9.25 on the balance beam and 9.25 on floor exercises. That all added up to 35.8 points to capture the all-around. Nolan’s total edged out New Paltz seventh-grader Ady Laurie, who was the all-around runnerup with 33.55 points.

“I have worked really hard these past few months, doing a lot of gymnastics,” Nolan said. “I went out there and did my best, hit my routines, and it paid off. I’m really proud of myself and excited for states.”

In addition to Nolan and Laurie, eight other gymnasts are heading to Long Island this weekend. They include:

* Wallkill’s Miah Frisbie, Chloe Quatrocchi and Rachel Vassel, who helped lead the Panthers to the Section 9 team title.

* Roosevelt’s Clara Patton and Emma Jaeger.

* Highland’s Zoe Munson – who finished third in the all-around – and Valerie Precour.

* And Saugerties’ Sienna Silipo.
