Both Teams Win Quarterfinal Games, Will Meet At County Center

POUGHKEEPSIE – Well, one thing’s for sure.

We will definitely have one team in the Hudson Valley Sports Report coverage area playing for a Section 1, Class AA girls basketball championship next weekend.

That much was secured Friday night when No. 2 seed Arlington beat No. 10 John Jay, 46-28, and No. 3 Lourdes held off No. 6 Ossining, 63-56, in quarterfinal games.

That means in the bottom half of the bracket it will be Round III between league rivals Arlington and OLL on Thursday when they meet in a sectional semifinal game at the Westchester County Center. The Admirals and the Warriors split their two regular-season games.

The winner will play Sunday, March 8, in the championship game.

Lourdes was led by Ava learn, who had 18 points, and Sofia Feigelson added 11. Skylar Felice totaled 10 points and Ashley Seymour chipped in with eight.

“It was a foul-fest, and we were trying to keep Ava in the game,” Lourdes coach Al Viani said of Learn, who had three fouls in the first half and played with four in the second half. “We almost gave it away at the end but we held on.”

Asked about another game with the Admirals, Viani said, “Round III, right? We’ll be ready for them. We have to do two things. No. 1 keeping Ava out of foul trouble. And two, we have to take care of the ball better and not turn it over.”

Especially against Arlington.

The Admirals were once again impressive on Friday night, slowly and methodically pulling away at a steady pace. This allowed the team to get to the County Center and the semifinals for the first time in 21 years – or since head coach Kim Costello was last there, as a player.

Morgan Hammell led the Admirals with 11 points.
