Warriors Baseball Edge Sawyers 6-5

SAUGERTIES – Saugerties High School baseball is 8-4 overall but has dropped two straight and coach Mike Pugliese has an idea of why.

“You can’t walk nine guys and eight errors and expect to win,” he said after the Sawyers lost to Lourdes on Saturday night, 6-5, in a non-league game. “However, we tied it back up in the seventh and had an opportunity to win. It seems to be a theme of our season to play exciting games and the last two haven’t gone our way.”

Nick Gastin knocked in two runs for OLL. Brian Alcieri pitched the bottom of the eighth to earn the win.

Nick Dennis homered, tripled and knocked in three runs for the Sawyers.

“We like to say in the close games, we need to focus on the small things. However the last two nights, it’s the big things like catching the ball and swinging the bat,” Pugliese said. “Regardless, everything we want to accomplish is still there for us and we will be ready to go in Wallkill on Tuesday.”
