ONTEORA GOLF NIPS SPACKENKILL

Spartans’ Whalen Earns Medalist Honors

WOODSTOCK – Spackenkill High School’s Luke Whalen took medalist honors but Onteora’s depth was the key as the Eagles beat the Spartans, 177-184, in a Mid-Hudson Athletic League match on Thursday.

It was the season opener for both teams.

The match was played at the par-35 Woodstock Golf Club. Whalen’s 1-over 36 was a career low. He had a birdie and 16 putts.

But the Eagles were able to squeeze four players within nine strokes to take the victory. Adam Williams led Onteora with a 40 while Avery Burns turned in a solid 43. Ori Grady and Anthony Umhey rounded out the scoring with a 45 and 49, respectively.

The match was tied after the top four players on each team came in, so it was decided by the fifth player. Onteora came in seven strokes better.

“What a great high school golf match to open up the season. It was close, it was competitive, and I think it really set the tone for how competitive our division is going to be,” Spackenkill coach Greg Allen said. “I’m really proud of how we competed on the road at a tough course against a good team. It’s a testament to how focused our team has been early in the season and how focused they were over the summer. At the same time, we’re not satisfied with a loss. We’re angry. But we’re going to channel that anger towards refocusing and working harder so that we can get over the hump.”

Robert DeLaurentis added a 43 for the Spartans, Rachel Curatolo shot 50 and Oliver Katz had a 55.
