Admirals Shut Out John Jay In Finals

FREEDOM PLAINS – It would have been nice, under normal circumstances, to once again see where the Arlington High School girls soccer team could go from here.

The 2016 New York State Class AA champions and ’16, ’17 and 18 Section 1 champs have made a dent in the state playoffs for some time now. But not this year, of course. Not in the year of the coronavirus, when anything beyond a sectional playoff was canceled.

So the Admirals will have to be content with again being the best team in Dutchess after they wrapped up a perfect 10-0 season with a 3-0 win over John Jay in the finals of the Dutchess County Regional Championship on Saturday.

Junior Casey Stowell, who scored one of the three goals along with Ava Allen and Megan Stowell, said she will revel in the positives.

“This team this year is the first Arlington team to go undefeated, so that is a great accomplishment in itself,” she said. “I’m really proud of our seniors and they’re going to be missed.”

Head coach Kelley Hand felt much the same during a tumultuous, hold-your-breath kind of season.

It was the third time this season that Arlington and Jay have met, and the Patriots started strong. But the backbreaker came late in the first half when Allen scored unassisted at the top of the box to give the Admirals a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Marissa Foster assisted Megan Stowell in the box to go up 2-0 and Jenna Jedlicka found Casey Stowell in the box to put the third goal away.

“It was a great game against a great team,” Casey Stowell said. “We knew going in that John Jay would be a tough opponent. It’s difficult to play a team three times with a successful outcome and the game reflected that. Our defense had a phenomenal game.”
