Admirals Need OT To Defeat Indians

FREEDOM PLAINS – Arlington High School football coach Mike Morano has been watching tape on his opponents all year, including Mahopac, but on Friday night he saw something different in the Indians.

“They’ve found a way to get better every week, and tonight was the first time they figured out a way to get the ball to their skill position people. Lucky me, right?” Morano said with a laugh after his Admirals slugged it out with Mahopac and needed extra time to put away a 34-28 overtime win over the Indians.

Arlington improved to 5-1 overall while Mahopac dropped to 2-4.

Mahopac played as well as, if not better than, it did in its two victories in rallying from a 21-7 halftime deficit, including a late score that sent the game into overtime tied at 28.

Louis Mezzone scored on a six-yard run to open the OT but Arlington missed the extra point.

“I thought that was going to come back and haunt us,” Morano said, “but we stopped them on four downs. And that was the first time all game we stopped them.”

Mezzone had two touchdowns, and quarterback Xavier Powell had rushing TDs of 12, 32 and 1 yard.
