Red-Hot Admirals Shut Out The Patriots

FREEDOM PLAINS – The Arlington High School boys soccer program has certainly been on streaks like this before. After all, we are talking about a multi-time state champion here.

But after starting out a pedestrian 3-3, the Admirals have checked off some signature wins.

Beat defending New York State, Class AA champ Monroe-Woodbury.

Beat defending Section 1, Class AA champ Ketcham.

And on Wednesday, beat defending league champion and archrival John Jay, 2-0.

“It’s nice to start off league play with wins over Jay and Ketcham,” Arlington coach Craig Sanborn said. “It’s a good confidence booster for our group.”

Arlington is now 6-3 overall; the Patriots are 8-3.

James Conca opened the scoring late in the first half, assisted by Kevin Thompson at the 35th minute. In the second half, Franco Colantuono, assisted by Kam Payman, tallied in the 62nd minute.

Nick Grippo made eight saves for the shutout.

“This was a really nice win for us,” Sanborn said. “We had to handle a lot of pressure from Jay and Nick Grippo had an outstanding game to keep the zero on the scoreboard.”
