Last Chance Helps The Sting Of Losing The Spring Season

FISHKILL – Nobody will ever take away the pain of losing the entire spring high school sports season back in March – especially for seniors – when the state made the difficult decision to suspend all activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Hudson Valley Renegades, their own season canceled in its entirety for 2020, helped to tke some of the sting away by hosting the “Bottom of the 9th Seniors’ Last Swing tournament at Dutchess Stadium this week and next.

Six teams – Goshen, Highland, Slate Hill Sluggers (Minisink Valley), New York Nighthawks (travel team with players from multiple schools), Cortlandt and Somers – began play on Tuesday with three games each among Highland, Slate Hill and the Nighthawks.

The second pool of Goshen, Cortlandt and Somers will do the same on Wednesday with consecutive games starting at 8 a.m. and ending at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The winners of each pool will meet in a best-of-three championship series on August 6, back at the Stadium.

Photographer Todd McDonough made the quick switch from golf over the weekend to baseball to bring us these fabulous photos from Day 1.
