Visiting Gladiators Forge Three-Way Division Tie With Win

NEW PALTZ – They call Goshen High School quarterback Matt Giordano “Matty Ice,” and, well, why not? As nicknames go, it sounds a heck of a lot better than “Matty Efficient” or “Matty Consistent.”

Which Giordano is, of course, and he showed it again on Friday night.

The QB threw four touchdown passes and Goshen forged a three-way tie in Section 9, Class A, Division II with a 28-21 victory over stubborn New Paltz at Floyd Patterson Field.

The Gladiators, Huguenots and Wallkill all finish 3-1 in division play. Wallkill beat Goshen during the regular season, Goshen just beat New Paltz, and New Paltz beat Wallkill.

Giordano, who came into the game having thrown for 1,352 yards, increased his touchdown passes to 12 against just one interception all season. He threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Price on the first series of the game and then connected with Elijah Price for 24 yards and a 14-0 lead before the first quarter ended.

Giordano later threw a 56-yard strike to Logan Mullane for a score and again to Mullane for 10 yards early in the fourth quarter. And the Gladiators needed them.

New Paltz simply wouldn’t go away, using a two-yard run by Logan Pece to cut the lead to 14-6, a one-yard run by Anthony DiMarco to cut it to 21-13 and a 50-yard punt return from Anthony Stevens to make it 28-21.

But the Gladiators buckled down and held off the Huguenots the rest of the way.
