Good First Round For Jay, Ketcham, Arlington, Carmel, Pawling And Beacon

WICCOPEE – The John Jay High School baseball team cranked out 12 hits on Saturday, as the sixth-seeded Patriots whipped No. 11 Port Chester, 16-5, in a Section 1, Class AA first-round game.

In fact Jay led a brigade of Dutchess and Putnam county teams that had a strong first day in the tournament.

Third-seeded Arlington beat perennial power North Rockland, 4-2, and the Admirals will host John Jay in Monday’s quarterfinals.

Carmel, seeded fourth, blew out No. 13 Ossining, 18-0, and second-seeded Ketcham was an easy 11-1 winner over No. 15 Scarsdale.

John Jay’s Ryan Rivera, David Cappuzello and Aidan Gallagher had three RBI each, while Charlie Sweeney, Lenny Vann, Vinny Fusco, Nico Batkay, Shane Heinemann and Joe Muscietta all knocked in a run.

In Class A1, No. 7 Beacon defeated Nyack 2-0 in the opening round. Matt Manzoeillo threw a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out six. He also drove in the first run of the game and Joey Vollaro added an RBI single in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs will travel to second seed Tappan Zee on Monday.

In Class B’s first round, No. 6 Pawling topped No. 11 Irvington, 12-8, to set a quarterfinal date Monday at No. 3 Rye Neck.
