OLL Beats Hornets – And COVID

POUGHKEEPSIE – It was touch-and-go there for the Our Lady of Lourdes High School football team this week.

The Warriors lost 17 players to COVID-19 last week prior to a loss to Brewster, with all 17 having to quarantine for 10 days.

There was some discrepancy about when the actual return date for the players was supposed to be. Some said it wouldn’t be until Saturday, and there was even some talk about moving the game to Saturday or Sunday but a wedding for one of the Lakeland coaches put that hope to rest.

But, technically, from the moment the program found out and the players went into quarantine, 10 days meant they could come back on Friday night at 6 p.m. – 60 minutes before kickoff.

And return they did.

James DeSocio led a balanced rushing attack behind a dominant Lourdes offensive line, and the Warriors beat Lakeland, 30-18, at its Homecoming on Friday night.

OLL is now 2-2 overall.

“It was a great night, especially on Homecoming and Senior Night,” Lourdes coach Sean Keenan said. “And I have to give our JV kids a lot of credit. Everyone bought into what we were doing and those JV kids gave us some great looks in practice.”

DeSocio scored three rushing touchdowns and ran for 64 yards on the ground. John Matthew had 43 yards and a touchdown, and Angelo Salotto had 60 yards rushing.

Defensively, Matt Krauza had 10 tackles and Matthew had six. Sebastian Neusimov had a pair of sacks on defense.

And OLL got a huge lift from its special teams. The Warriors maintained 14-12 lead at the half when they blocked a Lakeland field goal attempt with four seconds left before intermission.

Then, after the Hornets took the second half kickoff but were stymied by the Lourdes defense, OLL’s Christian Quinones blocked a punt that led to a Warrior score and a 22-12 lead.

“That really turned the game around,” Keenan said.

Here’s yet another great photo gallery from the game by our man Todd McDonough.
