Blazers’ Volleyball Knocks Off Top-Seeded Spackenkill

POUGHKEEPSIE – The Underdog Tour continued for the Millbrook High School volleyball team on Friday as the No. 5 Blazers beat No. 1 Spackenkill, 3-0, in a Section 9, Class C semifinal.

Scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-9.

Millbrook will face John S. Burke in the sectional championship game on Sunday at SUNY New Paltz at 10 a.m.

Now 11-2 overall, the Blazers were led by Cecilia Dignan’s five kills, 23 assists and two aces. Julia Stoliker had 14 kills, an ace and nine digs; Callie McGuire totaled 11 kills, three aces and six digs; Bella Darnell had four kills and four aces, and Natalie Fox added three kills.

“Very happy with the way we performed, loved our confidence on the court and in our skills and abilities,” Millbrook coach Shawn Stoliker said. “I feel like it is coming together. It’s been a roller coaster ride with the youth; it’s been a learning process. But the last two matches have been a different team on the court.”

The last time the Blazers failed to make the sectional final was in 2010.

“We played (Burke) in the semifinals last year and they are mostly the same team,” Stoliker said. “We’ll look and see some of their stats, who they played, maybe a little video. Our thing is, if we perform the way we perform, we should be fine.”
