Arlington Girls Place 2nd Overall, Boys Are 6th; Haldane Wins Class D

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Arlington High School had three girls among the top 13 runners on Saturday, placing second overall as a team in the Section 1 Cross Country Championships at Bowdoin Park.

The Arlington boys placed sixth overall as Daniel Caso had the best race of the day of any local runner, coming in second in a time of 16 minutes, 40.3 seconds. North Rockland’s Daniel Shephard won the boys race in 16:21.3 while his teammate, Katelyn Tuohy, captured the girls race by running the course in 17:13.7.

North Rockland won both team championships. Arlington’s girls were the runnerup as Jalyssa Smith, Anna Recktenwalt and Kaitlyn Murtaugh finished sixth, 10th and 13th, respectively.

Haldane boys and girls won both of the Class D team races.

Carmel’s Katie Turk had another strong race, placing fifth overall in a time of 19:22.8 in leading the Rams to a fifth-place team finish, while Elsa Neubauer of Brewster qualified for states by finishing eighth overall with a time of 19:41.6. The Bears were 16th overall.

John Jay placed 13th as a team.

In the boys race, John Jay finished seventh as a team, Carmel was eighth and Brewster was 12th.

Individually, Pawling sophomore Noah Brightman had a terrific day, placing 14th among the big boys of higher classes by finishing 14th in a time of 17:12.5, while Brewster’s Finn Ratajack and Carmel’s Josh Goldberg were 16th and 17th, respectively.
