Section 9 Champions Move On To State Tournament

NEW PALTZ – Three championship matches, three sweeps.

Section 9 held the back end of its high school volleyball championships on Sunday at SUNY New Paltz for Classes AA, A and C, and the title matches produced three 3-0 results.

(Red Hook and Mount Academy won the Section 9, Class B and D titles, respectively, on Saturday at Bard College.

Millbrook kicked off the trio of games with a 10 a.m. start. By 11:17, the Blazers had recorded a 25-9, 25-12, 25-21 victory over John S. Burke for their fifth consecutive Class C championship.

Millbrook rolls into states on Tuesday with a first-round matchup against Section 1 champion Valhalla at neutral Kingston High School at 7:30 p.m.

“We definitely executed again. That makes me happy,” Millbrook coach Shawn Stoliker said. “We’re very efficient in what we did and didn’t make a lot of errors. We made them earn their points for the most part. But we performed exactly the way we should in the postseason.”

Julia Stoliker had 12 kills and three aces to again pace the Blazers. Callie McGuire had six kills and a pair of aces, Bella Darnel also had six kills to go with three aces and four blocks, and Cecilia Dignan had two kills, 24 assists, an ace and seven digs.

Dignan also became the first player in school history to record 1,000 digs.

Asked if he knew anything about Valhalla, Stoliker laughed and said, “Well …. Truth be told, we’ve been studying them for three, four weeks now. You don’t like to admit you’re looking ahead but you do. We have had video on Valhalla since October. We’ve been working on their offense and defense for the past two weeks. Valhalla pushed us to the limit last year in the regional championship, and they return their whole team.”

In Class AA, Pine Bush goes back-to-back for sectional championships with a 25-11, 26-24 and 25-12 victory over Monroe-Woodbury.

Taylor Pannell had another big game with 18 kills, four blocks, three digs and two aces. Teammate Taylor Jones had three kills, 17 assists, a block, four aces and eight digs.

Pine Bush will face Section 1 champ Ossining on Wednesday at 5:30 in the first round of states at Kingston HS.

Finally, in Class A, a ho-hum story – Cornwall won its incredible 15th consecutive sectional crown with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 victory over Wallkill.

The Dragons will face Section 1 stalwart Hendrick Hudson in the first round of states on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Kingston.
