Wins Over Middletown, Fallsburg Highlight Tri-Meet

PINE BUSH – They didn’t win the battle, but they won the war.

The Pine Bush High School boys and girls cross country teams did not have a runner cross the finish line first on Tuesday. What they did have, however, was plenty of depth, allowing the Bushmen and Bushwomen to both sweep a tri-meet with Middletown and Fallsburg.

The Pine Bush boys defeated Middletown 20-42 and topped Fallsburg 15-50. The Middies beat Fallsburg 15-50.

On the girls side, Pine Bush defeated Middletown 23-32 and Fallsburg 15-50. Middletown beat the Comets 15-50.

The Middies’ Joe Downs won the boys race, covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 17 minutes, 32 seconds. But the Bushmen’s Jaelin Edwards, Kiyan Hocek, Aiden Gentile, Jonny Aguilar, Stephen Thomson, Brandon Lopez, Alan Soto, Colin Best and Ryan McNamara incredibly took the next nine spots to assure the victory.

Edwards came in with a time of 17:57.

Fallsburg’s Shawn Leszcynski led the Comets by finishing 22nd.

In the girls race, Middletown’s Dana Lynch was the runaway – pardon the pun – winner, covering the course in 20:26, a minute and 39 seconds clear of her closest competitor.

But, like the boys, the depth of the Bushwomen proved key as Paige Liodice, Amelia Tremper, Makayla Sierpinski, Susan Fernandez and Danielle Lovelace finished 2-3-5-6-7.

Emily Gonzalez of the Middies finished fourth.
