Poughkeepsie High School standout quarterback Nigel Whitaker III, who suffered a shoulder injury to his throwing arm that caused him to miss his entire sophomore year this fall, says he will definitely be back and ready to play in 2020.

Except he’ll be doing it three miles away.

Whitaker on Thursday confirmed to Hudson Valley Sports Report that he is transferring to Our Lady of Lourdes effective Monday.

Whitaker, one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the area, burst on the scene in 2018 as a freshman. He accounted for 2,000 total yards and 20 touchdowns in six games.

The move is a boon for Lourdes and a blow to the Pioneers, whose football program has struggled to maintain consistency with five head coaches in the last five years – including Whitaker’s father.

“Lourdes is possibly the best school in the area, and I wanted to stay as close to home as possible,” the sophomore said. “The education there is superb, so I felt like I made the right decision transferring. I felt like this put me in a better position to be successful athletically and educationally.”

OLL has a returning quarterback in Brandon Jorgensen, who led the Warriors to a berth in the Section 1, Class A playoffs, where Lourdes lost to No. 1 John Jay-Cross River, 45-20, in the quarterfinals.

Lourdes coach Brian Walsh, reached Thursday night, said “we can always use another athlete. We’ll work it out. I look forward to coaching Nigel.”

Whitaker said he is progressing well from the surgery for a torn cartilage. It kept him out for the entire season, which means he can transfer without having to sit out a year since he already sacrificed a full year of football. He will not play any sports for OLL this spring.

“I feel great,” he said. “I should definitely be 100% by spring workouts and I definitely plan on being ready by (next) August.”
