Pioneers Nip Ketcham In Exciting Meet

POUGHKEEPSIE – It took 22 days into the month of September for the Poughkeepsie High School girls swimming team to finally open its season, and it was well worth it.

With longtime coach Galen Franchek leading the way from poolside, the Pioneers began their schedule with an exciting 86-82 victory over Roy C. Ketcham on Wednesday at the Poughkeepsie Middle School.

While Ketcham won eight of the 11 races, it was Poughkeepsie’s depth that eked out the close victory.

The Pioneers’ Renata Martinez was a double winner, taking the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 20.75 seconds and the 100-free in 1:04.85. Poughkeepsie’s 200-free relay team was also victorious.

But where Po’town picked up its points was in a plethora of second-place finishes. Julia Quezada (pictured above) was the runnerup in the 200-Individual Medley and the 100-freestyle, while Olivia Nyugen placed second in the 200-free and 100-breaststroke.

Jasmine Bautista was second in the 50-free. Ashley Ojeda came in second in the 100-butterfly, Abigail Matthews was second in the 500-free and Riona Creavy also record a second-place finish.

Ketcham had three individual double winners. Sophie Varon took the 200-IM and the 100-breast. Phoebe DiNardo was the winner in the 50-free and 500-free. And Annie Vallamattan touched first in the 100-butterfly and 100-backstroke.

RCK also won a pair of relays.
