Raiders Knock Off Saugerties In Class A

RED HOOK – Well, one thing is for sure.

The Red Hook High School softball team will be carrying some serious momentum into the Section 9, Class A championship game against Minisink Valley on Saturday.

The Raiders assured themselves of that with an exciting walk-off win, rallying in Friday’s semifinals for a 3-2 victory over Saugerties.

Red Hook and Minisink will play for the crown Saturday at 1 p.m. at Middletown High School.

Down 2-1 and facing elimination, Red Hook opened the seventh inning when Katheryn Mullen-Mechtly was safe at first base on an error. Alexis Murphy followed with a single and Lindsay Martin reached first base on a fielders choice as Saugerties was able to get the out at third base.

With runners on first and second, Dylan Lane singled to score Murphy and tie the game. Lauren Totman then singled to load the bases with one out, brining Helena O’Shea to play for an epic at-bat.

O’Shea fouled off nine pitches before driving a ground ball toward second base. Martin scooted home to beat the throw, giving Red Hook the win.

The Sawyers had gone ahead in the sixth when Maddey Dodig singled with two outs and scored on an error. Kailey Collins then scored on a single by Christie Collins to make it a 2-1 game.
