RED HOOK SOFTBALL SENDS A MESSAGE

Raiders Shut Down Marlboro In MHAL Game

RED HOOK – Throw Red Hook High School softball into the mix of teams with serious designs on a Mid-Hudson Athletic League championship.

The Raiders sent their message on Monday, using two pitchers to shut down perennial title contender Marlboro, 4-1.

Red Hook, Marlboro, defending champ Roosevelt, Pine Plains, Dover and state-ranked New Paltz are all among the teams vying for the four spots in the MHAL tourney.

Lindsey Martin was the starting pitcher, striking out two and walking two in 3.1 scoreless innings. Alexis Murphy came on and fanned six in the final 3.2 innings. Marlboro’s best scoring threat came in the top of the seventh when Mel Papuli doubled, moved to third on a single and scored on a bunt.

But Murphy pitched out of it to preserve the win.

In the meantime, the Raiders built a 4-0 lead. Murphy doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning and scored on Martin’s triple. Alyssa Virga followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Martin.

In the third inning, Murphy led off with a walk, Martin doubled her to third and Murphy scored on another sac fly by Virga.

In the fifth inning, Murphy led off – are you seeing a pattern here? – with a double. She advanced to third on a groundout by Samantha Loscalzo and scored on an RBI single by Martin.
