SAVAGE TAKES MHAL TENNIS TITLE

Wallkill Standout Is Singles Champ; Marlboro Duo Win Doubles Crown

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON – Being the No. 3 seed in any bracket is tough. Simply put, if you want a championship then, barring upsets, you need to go through both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds.

Wallkill High School’s Emily Savage did just that on Friday, taking down the top two seeds to win the Mid-Hudson Athletic League girls tennis singles championship at Bard College.

Marlboro’s Sammy Jaros and Ava Del Salto captured the doubles title.

Savage, seeded third, beat No. 1 seed Natalie Meyer of New Paltz in the semifinals in a terrific three-set match, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the finals, it was No. 2 Grace Messinger of Marlboro, and Savage won that match by the score of 6-1, 6-4.

Jaros and Del Salto had a stirring three-set match in the finals, as they defeated Spackenkill’s Emily Ma and Rachel Li, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
