Minisink Valley Takes Section 9, Class AA Softball Crown

As cliché as it is to say, the fact that sectional championship games have to end with one team moving on and the other wiping away tears and packing up the equipment for good seems almost criminal.

Especially in games that were this brilliant.

Top-seeded Minisink Valley High School kept its unbeaten season going with a thrilling 1-0, nine-inning victory over No. 3 Monroe-Woodbury at neutral Middletown High School on Saturday.

MV pitcher Alayna Savaglio helped the Warriors win their first sectional title in 12 years, outdueling Monroe-Woodbury hurler Samantha Ryan in a matchup of two of the area’s best pitchers.

It wasn’t decided until the bottom of the ninth inning – one inning before going to the international tie-breaker procedure of putting a runner on second base to start the inning, a convenient rule to help break ties where anything can happen.

Minisink Valley put a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth and, with two out, Kaelyn Flanagan laced a base hit down the left field line to end it.
