SEBASTIAN SMITH DOMINATES FOR WAPPINGERS SWIM

Sophomore Has Two Superb Qualifying Times

NEWBURGH – Sebastian Smith already knows he’s going to the Section 1 championship swim meet.

Now he knows he’s also going to the New York State meet.

Smith qualified for states with a superb time in the 100-yard butterfly on Tuesday, leading the Wappingers Pirates to a 93-77 victory over Yonkers in boys swimming.

Wappingers, the combined team from district high schools Roy C. Ketcham and John Jay, is now 4-1 overall.

Smith, a sophomore at Ketcham, had already qualified for sectionals in multiple events – and that includes his swim of 59.10 seconds in the 100-backstroke against Yonkers – but now he has a berth in states in the 100-butterfly.

Smith won the event in a time of 53.82 seconds, with 13 tenths of a second to spare.

“Sebastian is a very hard-working, dedicated swimmer,” Wappingers coach Renay Cerrato said. “He is very goal-oriented and very focused.”
