After two years of bitter feelings and contentious debate, Section 1’s Executive Committee is bringing its boys and girls basketball tournaments back home.

The Section announced this afternoon that the Westchester County Center will host all boys and girls semifinals and championship games starting this season with the March 2020 events.

For the past two years, semifinal games had been at the discretion of the higher-seeded team – though many chose the County Center anyway – and the title games were moved to Pace University.

It was a decision that caused near-unanimous anger among fans, players and coaches. The County Center had been the host of the boys basketball finals since 1933 and the girls hoop championship games since 1999.

A coalition of coaches even sued Section 1 to return the semifinals and finals to the County Center before settling on a separate deal with Westchester County to be able to use the facility for semifinal games.

Now it won’t be an issue as new Section 1 Executive Director Todd Santabarbara, who is in his first year after taking over from Jennifer Simmons, worked diligently to return the event to the County Center.
