SECTIONAL CHAMPS!

Fratarcangeli, Bulgia Star As Arlington Wins Title In Extra-Inning Thriller!

FISHKILL – This most unlikely of championships for the Arlington High School baseball team came not with ease but with a series of escalating thrillers, none greater than the final on Saturday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Handcuffed by White Plains starter Gerigh Hauser for eight innings, including striking out 11 times, the patient Admirals broke through in the top of the ninth inning on Mike Bulgia’s two-run triple, and No. 10 Arlington beat the No. 5 Tigers, 2-0, to win the Section 1, Class AA title before a loud, raucous crowd at Dutchess Stadium.

It’s the Admirals’ third title in six years, and first since going back-to-back in 2012 and 2013.

Pitcher Robert Fratarcangeli was an outstanding winner on the mound, going all nine innings in one of the grittiest, most resilient performances you will see. While Fratarcangeli might not have been as overpowering as Hauser, he brilliantly pitched out of trouble when needed and was as equally frustrating to White Plains.

Arlington finally broke through in the top of the ninth inning. Austin Zakow – every bit the hero as Fratarcangeli and Bulgia with not one but two pickoffs from his catcher’s position – stroked a one-out single.

Then CJ Light came up, saw what he liked, and also singled, putting runners at first and second with one out for Bulgia.

And then Bulgia did this.

A shot to the gap set off an immediate, wild circus in front of the Arlington dugout with a triple that plated both runs and a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Fratarcangeli worked out of one more jam with two runners on – the fourth time in the game he did that – and the Admirals were champs.
