SHUST’S HAT TRICK HELPS BURKE NAIL DOWN DIVISION TITLE

Boy Soccer Team Has Big Second Half In Win Over Fallsburg

GOSHEN – It was almost like the John S. Burke Catholic High School boys soccer team – this version of it, anyway – was on the outside looking in.

“Burke soccer has a great history,” forward Chris Shust said. “We’re glad to be part of it now.”

The Eagles added a little bit more to the history books on Tuesday. For the first time in eight years, Burke is the OCIAA Division IV champion after defeating Fallsburg, 5-1, on Tuesday.

Shust had a hat trick as the Eagles rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

“This was a total team effort,” Shust said. “Last year we were down against Fallsburg at halftime as well and needed the win to qualify for sections. So nobody panicked, and eventually our shots found the back of the net.”

Ryan Manna, whose big week started on the football field Saturday when his 50-yard field goal with 50 seconds left beat Chester, had two goals and two assists for Burke.

“Winning any type of championship is a nice reward for the work we all put in,” Shust said. “Our first goal has been accomplished. Now it’s time to try and win a sectional title.”
