Patriots Take Down Archrival Arlington In League Opener

WICCOPEE – Before the season started, Arlington High School boys soccer coach Craig Sanborn was asked about his team and the upcoming year.

When the conversation turned to the teams to beat in the league and in Section 1, Sanborn was quick to answer without hesitation.

“John Jay,” he said. “I know there are teams in Westchester that will be up there as well, but John Jay has the goods this year.”

Sanborn got his first up-close look at the Patriots on Monday, and nothing has changed his assessment.

Jay got a goal and two assists from Matt Zarrella, and the Patriots downed the Admirals, 4-1, in the league opener.

John Jay is perfect through six games on the season.

“We feel that the key to our success so far is just to stay locked in,” Zarrella said. “We’ve had a couple of quick back to back games against really tough opponents and it hasn’t been easy. We are making sure to stay focused every time we step on the field.”

Ryan Kieser, Grant Bryant and Matt Nansen – who had a five-goal game earlier this season – also scored for John Jay.
