SMITH PACES FDR BOYS IN 2021 DEBUT

Josiah Drops 18 In Win Over Pine Plains

HYDE PARK – Josiah Smith led a Franklin D. Roosevelt High School boys basketball team just thankful to be back on the court, and the Presidents kicked off a truncated 2021 season with a 58-36 victory over Pine Plains on Friday night.

“In the grand scheme of things I was just happy for the kids to be back on the floor,” FDR coach Kevin Hart said. “It’s a different situation but all in all we took some pride in being back out there.”

Smith, a junior, had a game-high 18 points for the Presidents.

“He’s just a leader on the floor,” Hart said of Smith. “He’s our captain and did a great job getting to the rim. Defensively, he’s tenacious. He stepped up, especially in the second half.”

Jordan Blue, a transfer from Lourdes, had 13 points for Roosevelt and Hunter Vansteenburgh added 11 points.

Zachary Strang netted 12 for the Bombers.

“We got off to a sluggish start; I think we definitely had some butterflies because of the layoff,” Hart said. “I think the difference was our defensive intensity right after halftime. It changed the complexion of the game.”

FDR goes to Webutuck on Tuesday.
