STRONG WIN IN EXTRAS FOR HIGHLAND

Baseball Team Nips O’Neill In Eight

HIGHLAND – Mike Malheiro knows exactly what to do in big moments.

His job.

The Highland High School multi-sport star is a Section 9 wrestling champion, a standout football player who once blocked a field goal with seconds remaining to preserve a Husky win, and a baseball player who understood what his role was on Thursday afternoon.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning of a tie game Malheiro stayed within himself and lifted a game-winning sacrifice fly, delivering a 6-5 Highland win over James I. O’Neill.

Cameron Nuessil scored the winning run after he doubled in the eighth and moved to third on a pair of walks.

Ethan Thompson led the Huskies with three hits and a pair of RBI, and also went six innings on the mound.

Bryan Jones had two hits and two RBI for the Raiders, and Josh Borowicz tied it with a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
