Field Hockey Suffers 5-1 Setback At Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Junior forward Justine O’Reilly scored the Hawks’ lone goal on Wednesday evening as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey squad suffered its first defeat of 2016, falling at Montclair State 5-1 in non-conference action.

New Paltz (2-1) trailed just 1-0 at intermission but surrendered four second-half goals to the Red Hawks (4-0). O’Reilly’s goal was the only shot recorded for New Paltz for the match.

After giving up a Montclair goal just 1:56 into the contest, neither team found the back of the cage the rest of the opening half. The Red Hawks tacked on three more unanswered goals before O’Reilly scored her third goal of the year in the 64th minute, thanks to a pass from the right side to the middle from sophomore forward Serena Capsello.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Gangewere, who was just named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Defensive Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend, made a career-high 23 stops in the cage, which ranks sixth-most all-time in single game program history.

The last 20-save game for New Paltz ironically occurred at Montclair State on Sept. 24, 2003, as Erica Engstrom stopped 20 shots in that match.

New Paltz will look to bounce back at non-conference opponent Union (NY) on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. Last season, the Hawks knocked off the Dutchwomen 6-0.
