Week 2 has come and gone, and already a Top 3 team in the Hudson Valley Sports Report High School Football Power Rankings is out.

John Jay’s loss shook things up at the top and launched Arlington back into the Top 10 from the preseason.

Also, something new this week – at the request of many fans, players and coaches, we separated the rankings. Traditional, 11-man football has its own power rankings, and now 8-man football has its own weekly rankings.

These remain the most comprehensive rankings you will find in the mid-Hudson Valley. We cover 56 high schools in five counties; you get ranked here and you’re talking best of the best in our area.

THE HVSR 2019 WEEK 2 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POWER RANKINGS

OUT – Washingtonville,

IN – Port Jervis, Goshen, Middletown

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR – Carmel, Mahopac, Rondout Valley, Minisink Valley

10) TIE, GOSHEN (2-0) and PORT JERVIS (2-0) – We’re not quite sure what to make of this duo so far, other than they’ve done what they’re supposed to do – win in the schedule put before them.

9) MIDDLETOWN (2-0) – See above. Middletown can sure score some points – 56-0 over Kingston on Friday – but hard to tell yet whether they can challenge a Newburgh. Sure seems like it though.

8) JOHN JAY (1-1) – A loss to Arlington was not what the Patriots were expecting on the road to another sectional title game. Expect this to be a wake-up call.

7) ARLINGTON (1-1) – Man, if Mike Morando isn’t one of the best coaches in the area. He took a team that looked inept on offense in Week 1, brought them to a hostile environment, and whipped John Jay.

6) BEACON (2-0) – Beacon 14, Walter Panasa 6. Guess what? The Bulldogs got themselves a defense after this one and the 18-0 opening night shutout of Poughkeepsie.

5) BREWSTER (2-0) – The Bears handled Lourdes on the road and vaulted themselves into the Section 1, Class A conversation.

4) TIE, KETCHAM (2-0) and CHESTER (2-0) – Combined, these two teams won by four points over the weekend. Ketcham was impressive with a late drive and two-point conversion to beat Mahopac. Chester is just …. Chester.

3) MARLBORO (2-0) – The Iron Dukes romped over Highland; 12 seconds after the game ended, they started looking toward this week’s big matchup against No. 1 Cornwall.

2) NEWBURGH (2-0) – The Goldbacks won their second straight with a victory over Valley Central, and now get a week off with their bye.

1) CORNWALL (2-0) – The Dragons breezed against New Paltz, but now comes the big test – on the road against Marlboro.

5) TRI-VALLEY (1-1) – It wasn’t a surprise that T-V lost to Pine Plains; the Bombers are good. It was surprising that it only put eight points on the board.

4) PAWLING (2-0) – How ‘bout them Tigers! Pawling is unbeaten and has a real test this week against Spackenkill.

3) MILLBROOK (2-0) – One of the wins was a forfeit from Eldred, but the Blazers’ offense sure looked good in a 60-34 win over Ellenville.

2) SPACKENKILL (2-0) – Methinks the Spartans, with dynamic QB Jayden Bennermon at the helm, might like this 8-man thing after all.

1) PINE PLAINS (2-0) – Right now the Bombers are just clicking. We knew they had the skill position players, but the offensive and defensive lines have been outstanding.
