As expected we had some movement in the Hudson Valley Sports Report High School Football Power Rankings for Week 5.

Not as much as we thought – no teams left the poll from last week, just merely moved up or down.

But as we come down the home stretch of the last couple of weeks of the regular season, there will be more.

The HVSR Power Rankings are the most comprehensive rankings you will find in the mid-Hudson Valley. We cover 56 high schools in five counties; you get ranked here and you’re talking best of the best in our area.

THE HVSR 2019 WEEK 5 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POWER RANKINGS
IN – None

OUT – None

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR – Minisink Valley, Wallkill, New Paltz, Liberty

10) TIE, ARLINGTON (3-2), JOHN JAY (3-2), MARLBORO (3-2) – As we’ve said all along, you don’t punish a team for losing to another quality school. All three of these teams lost but remain hanging on among the 3-2 teams.

9) TIE, GOSHEN (4-1) and PINE BUSH (3-2) – A tough first loss for the Gladiators knocks them back. Not dropping Pine Bush completely out of the rankings, not after the Bushmen took the No. 1 team in the state right down to the wire.

8) CHESTER (4-1) – Ron Stovall should get serious Coach of the Year consideration for what he’s doing with the Hambletonians and their all non-league schedule.

7) BURKE (4-1) – Eagles step out of class play for a moment for a great showdown on Saturday against Chester.

6) BREWSTER (4-1) – The Bears have been one of the surprise teams in the Valley. One regular-season game left this week before starting the 16-team, Section 1, Class A playoffs.

5) CARMEL (4-1) – Big leap for the Rams this week but well-deserved after thumping Arlington at Arlington. Carmel gets non-league Scarsdale this week.

4) PORT JERVIS (5-0) – Oh, my. The Erie Bell game against Middletown is going to be absolutely enormous.

3) MIDDLETOWN (5-0) – See above. This might be a night where they have to turn people away, this game is so big.

2) NEWBURGH (4-0) – The Goldbacks have slowly been putting it all together. This week’s road game at Pine Bush will be a good test.

1) CORNWALL (5-0) – There’s no doubt the Dragons have been tested this year, last week’s thriller against Pine Bush serving as Exhibit A. It’s unknown whether injured quarterback Aidan Semo will play.

THE 2019 HVSR WEEK 5 8-MAN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL POWER RANKINGS
5) ELLENVILLE (3-2) – Nice win last week to vault themselves into the rankings.

4) SPACKENKILL (3-2) – Sparty looked much sharper last week against Onteora after consecutive losses.

3) TRI-VALLEY (3-1) –.Just hanging back, waiting for the playoffs, hoping for redemption.

2) PAWLING (5-0) – The Tigers have been quietly impressive. They get Millbrook at home this week before next week’s big showdown with Pine Plains.

1) PINE PLAINS (5-0) – King of the 8-Man until somebody says otherwise.
