So, for the majority of high school football teams in the Hudson Valley Sports Report coverage area, two weeks are in the books.

A few – Highland, Lourdes, Kingston, Red Hook, Roosevelt – have three games under their belts after playing in the ‘Week 0’ games early in the season.

Whether that extra game helps those teams remains to be seen, but one of them is 3-0 and two of them are 2-1 so they’re feeling good right now.

As we head into Week 3, we have some great games on the schedule that will likely change the rankings again a week from today.

For now, here is your HVSR Top 5.

(HVSR covers 31 high schools – all Dutchess, Putnam and Ulster county schools, plus Newburgh in Orange County.)

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR – Wallkill (2-1), Kingston (2-1), Red Hook (2-1)

HONORABLE MENTION – Highland (3-0), Dover (2-0), Pine Plains (2-0), John Jay (1-1), Arlington (1-1)

5-PAWLING (2-0) – The Tigers are the defending Eight-Man League champions until somebody says otherwise. But they have back-to-back tough games coming up – at surprising 2-0 Dover this week and home to 2-0 Pine Plains following a bye week.

4-BEACON (2-0) – How ‘bout them Bulldogs! A surprising win over Kingston to start the season and then 21 straight points to erase a 14-0 deficit to beat Roosevelt. In the immortal words of Larry David, “Prett-ay, prett-ay good.”

3-NEWBURGH (1-1) – There’s no shame in suffering a last-minute, 18-13 loss to Cornwall, the two-time defending Class A state champion. That’s why Newburgh didn’t fall out of the Top 5 after starting the year No. 1.

2-MARLBORO (2-0) – Two games, two blowout wins. This week will tell us much more about the Iron Dukes however – they play Port Jervis, the team they lost to twice last season by more than 100 points.

1-CARMEL (2-0) – The Rams right now are clearly head-and-shoulders above everybody else, but they have a showdown coming up – a rematch of the 2019 Section 1, Class AA title game against New Rochelle. Let’s see what the Rams can do against the perennial champs.
