Warriors Win For The Second Time Against Bulldogs

BEACON – Abby Umhoeffer scored a pair of goals on Wednesday, and the Our Lady of Lourdes High School girls soccer team shut out Beacon, 5-0, in a league match.

It was the second time this season the Warriors have beaten the Bulldogs.

Leah Shank opened the scoring just 2 minutes, 17 seconds into the game, and Elaina Wagner and Claire Bottier each tallied in the second half. In fact, Wagner and Umhoeffer had goals just 21 seconds apart after halftime.

Jamie Drunkenmiller had three assists for OLL, which split goalkeeping duties between Cassie Gallagher (nine saves) and Chloe Kuehner (two saves).

Beacon was right there for all of the first half after Shank’s opening goal. The Bulldogs pressed hard, but a hand-ball in the box that wasn’t called and a crazy rebound that Claire Derrenbacher almost bicycled volleyed over the keeper’s head with her back to the goal just barely went over the crossbar and kept Beacon from tying it.

“That was probably the turning point in the game, not being able to score before the half,” Bulldogs coach Hugo Alzate said. “I thought we outplayed them in the last 20 minutes of the first half. We created some very solid chances and we were not able to capitalize. It gave us momentum going into the second half but Lourdes was too strong. We could not match their speed out wide and it was the difference in the game. They’re a very good team and we matched up as best as we could. I’m very proud of my girls’ effort. The score did not reflect the how closely these teams played in the first 63 minutes.”
