Hawks Stop A PK, Score 20 Seconds Later For 2OT Win

ELLENVILLE – Heartbreaking for one team.

Heart-stopping for the other.

In an incredible game, the Rhinebeck High School boys soccer team beat Ellenville on Friday, 1-0, in a superb double overtime Mid-Hudson Athletic League matchup.

“Both teams were tired and cramping up, but neither one would back down,” Ellenville coach Maxwell Mead said. “It was a fantastic showcase for HS soccer.”

After 104 minutes of defensive-minded soccer, the game turned in a 20-second span.

Ellenville’s Gavin Baxter tried a spin move in Rhinebeck territory and was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Blue Devils. But Brendan Hines came up with the huge save on the PK, and on the rebound Ellenville could only muster a soft shot that Hines again saved.

Hines then unloads a kick three-quarters of the way down the field and the Blue Devils missed a header to clear it. The ball fell to Rhinebeck’s Davin Greene on the wing, who fires a perfect shot from the right wing to the far upper post to end the game.
