Holan Latest To Qualify For Sectionals

NEWBURGH – 10 vs. 24?

Yep, seems fair.

The Wappingers Central boys swimming team and their 10-swimmer roster did it again, beating Mamaroneck and its 24-man team, 94-76, on Tuesday.

Wappingers, the combined team of Roy C. Ketcham and John Jay high schools, is now 2-1 on the season. The meet was held at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh.

Steve Holan qualified for sectionals in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.89 seconds to lead another slate of strong performances. Matthew McGregor won the 500 free and qualified for sections with a time of 5:18.99.

Kyle McGregor and Sebastian Smith went 1-2 in the 200-Individual Medley, and Smith came back and won the 100-butterfly in 54.6 seconds – nearly hitting the state meet qualifying time of 53.95 seconds.

All three of Wappingers’ relay teams were victorious.

“I have a very strong ‘A’ lineup,” coach Renay Cerrato said. “With only 10 swimmers you have to have that kind of talent, and we do.”
