WASHINGTONVILLE GIRLS REACH CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Wizards Will Face Kingston For Section 9, Class AA Crown

WARWICK – So, how passionate do these high school sectional basketball games get?

Ask Washingtonville’s Dyana Budakowski, who tweeted “Tonight is a night I will never forget.”

Budakowski and the No. 3 Wizards were nothing if not resilient on Thursday, getting a boost from the fans who traveled to watch Washingtonville knock off No. 2 Warwick on the road, 49-46, in a Section 9, Class AA semifinal.

The Wizards will face No. 4 Kingston in the sectional championship game on Saturday at SUNY Orange at Noon, weather permitting.

Down a point with under a minute to play, Washingtonville’s Michaela Beyers drilled a three-pointer to put her team up two, a bucket that proved to be the game-winner.

Wizards coach Jim Steeves said he thought the key was the role players.

“Washingtonville’s top two scorers and Warwick’s top two battled throughout the game, but the difference was the rest of Washingtonville’s team outscored the rest of Warwick’s team 17-6,” he said.

Warwick, which finishes the season at 20-2, was led by Lauren Desrats with 27 points and Emily Welling with 11.

Washingtonville, now 17-5, received 22 points from Victoria Pecovic, 10 from Victoria Mirecki and nine from Budakowski.
