WESTBY’S GOAL, REGGIO’S SHUTOUT LIFT MV

Boys Soccer Team Slips Past Cornwall, 1-0

MIDDLETOWN – The Minisink Valley High School boys soccer team needed more than just a victory.

“This was a big game for our morale,” Warriors coach Kevin Burns said after his team beat Cornwall, 1-0, in an OCIAA match on Wednesday. “We have struggled a little bit. We have ability, and I thought we would be able to pick up right where we left off last year but it is going to be a process. We aren’t necessarily young but more inexperienced, and it will take time.  We have had a few key injuries and are just trying to get everyone healthy right now.”

On this day, it all came together.

Nick Westby had his first career varsity goal in the 26th minute for what proved to be the game-winner.

“Nick is a talented player. Athletic with a lot of speed.  I have been trying to get him to be more aggressive and he did that today,” Burns said. “I thought he played very well and obviously his goal was huge.”

Brett Reggio made six saves to preserve the clean sheet and his second shutout of the season.

“It was a really good defensive effort across the board,” Burns said. “A complete team shutout.”
