WHALEN HELPS SPACK GOLF TO THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

Spartans Top Rhinebeck To Improve To 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE – If Luke Whalen was having some difficulties at the end of last week, as his coach suggested, all it took was one weekend away from golf to make it right.

Whalen earned medalist honors with a blistering 36 on Wednesday, leading the Spackenkill High School golf team to a 179-196 Mid-Hudson Athletic League win over Rhinebeck.

The Spartans are 3-1 overall.

Whalen had two birdies and 12 putts at McCann Memorial Golf Course.

“Luke was struggling at the end of last week. He took the weekend off and came out firing in practice Monday and Tuesday,” Spackenkill coach Greg Allen said. “The weekend off helped. He didn’t want to take it off. I had to beg him.”

Robert DeLaurentis shot 45 for the Spartans, Oliver Katz had a career-low 47 and Rachel Curatolo carded a 51.

“We’re locked in right now. We had two great practices on Monday and Tuesday. Everyone was focused, and I think this match was truly won Monday and Tuesday,” Allen said. “We hope to carry our momentum into Friday when we play Onteora. We’re excited for the opportunity to knock them off for the first time since 2017 and we’re going to embrace and enjoy the challenge.”

Colin Reichelt and Cole Dixon both shot a 46 to lead Rhinebeck.
